There are two equinoxes every year. “Equinox” literally means “equal night” in Latin. At the equator, on the equinox in March and September, the length of day (light) and night (dark) is nearly equal because the sun shines directly on the equator. The rest of the year, the sun is offset from the equator, thus night or day is longer, depending on whether the Earth is tilting away from or towards the Sun.
In the northern hemisphere, the March equinox is known as the spring equinox (coinciding with the first day of spring). In the southern hempisphere, it is known as the autumnal equinox (coinciding with the first day of fall).
