Summer Weather: Be Prepared

Today,  June 21st, is the beginning of summer. The warmer months present a likelihood of extreme weather. The top three weather hazards during the warmer months are Tornadoes, Wild Fires and Hurricanes. Because these come with little or no warning, every family should be prepared with a basic emergency supply kit. The FEMA basic disaster supply kit contains the following.

• 1 gallon of water per person per day for at least 3 days
• Non-perishable food, at least a 3 day supply
• Manual can opener
• First Aid Kit
• Whistle to signal for help
• Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar chargers
• Dust mask to filter contaminated air, plastic sheeting and duct tape for shelter
• Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
• Local maps
• Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
Battery powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA weather radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
• Flashlight and extra batteries
